Meat Cutter

Meat cutters who are sometimes called “butchers” prepare various kinds of meat for both the retail and wholesale industries. Their tasks involve cutting and trimming meat using saws slicers knives and power cutters. Meat cutters who work in meat processing plants may have to section whole carcasses. However those employed in stores serve customers by cutting wrapping and labeling packages of meat and in many cases fish and poultry as well. In some stores meat cutters must keep track of what has been sold and place orders when stock is running low. Meat cutters that work in stores should have good interpersonal and communication skills because they often deal directly with customers. The work of a meat cutter can be hazardous because it calls for using sharp tools so safety procedures must be followed carefully. Also meat cutters often have to lift and carry heavy items and they are required to spend some of their time in cold damp areas. Meat cutters should have a high school diploma or the equivalent. They need basic math skills because much of their job requires them to weigh and measure. Otherwise they learn the required skills for the trade through on-the-job training or apprenticeships that can last for up to two years. During this time they first learn how to trim and shape various cuts of meat and how to remove bones after which they are instructed on how to cut whole carcasses. They are also expected to be knowledgeable about safety with regard to the use of sharp tools and also with regard to food-borne pathogens.
