An art career can be fulfilling but it is highly competitive. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts employment in art-related jobs will grow but the outlook is most favorable for multimedia artists. Over half of artists are self-employed though many work for museums schools advertising agencies newspapers magazines and movie studios. Some are employed as medical and scientific illustrators or cartoonists. Salaries range from approximately $32000 for craft artists to $88500 for art directors. Not only must aspiring artists be skilled at their craft but they must be willing to market their work and remain flexible and willing to produce work that people will purchase. As far as education formal training is not strictly required but post-secondary training is usually necessary to develop skills.

Many colleges and universities have bachelor's and master's degree programs in fine arts that expose students to academic courses in English social and natural sciences in addition to art history and studio art.
