Art Instructor

Being an art instructor is challenging because not only do individuals need talent and long-standing passion for various forms of art but they must also possess the patience and communication skills that are vital in order to teach others.

Art instructors need some formal education typically a degree in fine arts or graphic design from a four-year college. To teach in private elementary and secondary schools an art-related degree plus experience (such as evidence ones own work has been accepted into exhibitions) are needed.

Degrees can be in fine arts studio art photography sculpting and sometimes even theatre art and fashion design. For public schools a teaching certificate might also be required. Art instructors often work with people that have widely varying degrees of interest and talent. They must be patient and able to understand that an important aspect of their job is encouraging students to express themselves and enhancing students appreciation of art rather than trying to mold all students into professional artists.
