Operating Room Tech

Operating room technicians sometimes called “surgical technicians” or “surgical technologists” perform tasks to ensure that operating rooms run efficiently. They get the operating room prepared for the surgery by checking to make sure that surgical instruments are sterilized and that all the necessary bandages linens and fluids are in place. In some cases they assist doctors by handing them surgical instruments and by counting sponges and needles before and after the surgery. They may also take any specimens collected during surgery to laboratories to be analyzed. In addition they may help take patients to recovery rooms when operations are completed. Operating room technicians need a high school diploma or the equivalent. According to the website httplibrary.thinkquest.org aspiring operating room technicians can complete programs in operating room technology which are offered by some vocational schools. However large hospitals may have programs designed to train students that want to be operating room technicians in subjects such as medical terminology physiology and sterilization methods. These programs may also include training in anatomy pharmacology laboratory procedures instrumentation and psychology. In addition to classroom work there is a clinical component. Upon completion of the program which usually lasts one year students can become certified by passing an examination administered by the Association of Surgical Technologists that qualifies them to become Certified Surgical Technologists (CSTs). However there may be more job opportunities for students who earn a two-year associate’s degree in surgical technology prior to passing the certification exam. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that jobs for operating room technicians will increase because of the greater number of surgical procedures that will be needed for an aging population. According to the website httpeducation-portal.com the median annual salary for operating room technicians is approximately $38800.
